Gianluigi Donnarumma: “I couldn’t wait to join Manchester City”
Manchester City have officially completed the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around £30 million. The Italian goalkeeper has signed a five-year contract and will replace Ederson, who has departed for Fenerbahçe.
Speaking after his move, Donnarumma expressed his excitement and pride:
> “Honestly, I couldn’t wait to go to Man City, because they wanted me strongly — Pep Guardiola wanted me strongly. I can only be proud to have arrived at a club like Manchester City. I’m very happy.”
The 25-year-old World Cup–winning goalkeeper described the move as a “special and proud moment”, adding:
> “I have admired watching Manchester City for many years. To now play for this club is a huge honour. I am joining a squad full of world-class talent, led by one of the greatest managers in football history. I will give everything to help the club achieve even more success.”
While Donnarumma arrives with a reputation as one of Europe’s best shot-stoppers, questions have been raised about his ability to adapt to Guardiola’s possession-based system, which relies heavily on goalkeepers being comfortable with the ball at their feet. The Italian, however, has already pledged to work on his distribution and prove himself at the Etihad.
With Ederson’s seven-year spell at the club now over, Donnarumma is set to become the new No. 1 and begin a new chapter in City’s goalkeeping evolution.
