Omar Artan Makes History: From World Cup Setback to UEFA Super Cup Glory
A setback at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been followed by a historic breakthrough for Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan.
At just 34, Artan is made football history yesterday, August 12, 2026, as he takes charge of the UEFA Super Cup between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria.
The appointment makes Artan the first referee from outside Europe and the first African referee to officiate the UEFA Super Cup.
But the significance of this moment goes far beyond one football match.
From Somalia to the biggest European stage
Artan has steadily broken barriers throughout his refereeing career. He became a FIFA-listed international referee in 2018 and went on to become the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations.
He later made another historic breakthrough by becoming the first Somali referee to take charge of a CAF Champions League final, overseeing the 2025 final between Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns. His performances earned him the 2025 CAF Men’s Referee of the Year award.
Now, his career has taken him to one of European football’s most prestigious fixtures.
The World Cup setback
Artan was selected among the officials for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
However, his World Cup dream was disrupted after he was denied entry into the United States despite reportedly holding a valid visa. Reports linked the decision to U.S. immigration and national-security concerns. As a result, he was unable to participate in the tournament as planned.
For a referee who had spent years climbing the international ladder, it was a major disappointment.
Artan described that period as extremely difficult, but the setback did not end his journey.
UEFA opened another door
Instead, an opportunity arrived that had never previously been given to a non-European referee.
Through increased cooperation between UEFA and CAF, Artan was appointed to referee the 2026 UEFA Super Cup. UEFA described him as one of Africa’s leading referees, noting his rapid rise on the international stage.
He will be supported by assistant referees Liban Abdoulrazack Ahmed of Djibouti and Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe of Kenya, giving the occasion an even stronger African representation.
A powerful lesson in resilience
Artan’s story is bigger than football.
He was selected for the World Cup, lost the opportunity because he could not enter the host country, and then returned to receive an appointment that would make him the first African referee ever to officiate the UEFA Super Cup.
