BREAKING: Patrick Vieira Appointed New Senegal Head Coach
Senegal have officially appointed Patrick Vieira as the new head coach of the national team, bringing the Dakar-born football legend back to the country where his journey began.
The Senegalese Football Federation confirmed Vieira’s appointment on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. He replaces Pape Thiaw, whose tenure ended following Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Vieira earned 107 caps for France, captaining one of the most successful generations in French football. His club career was equally impressive, particularly his legendary spell at Arsenal, where he became captain and won three Premier League titles, including the famous unbeaten 2003/04 “Invincibles” campaign.
🧠 First national-team coaching job
The Senegal position represents a new chapter in Vieira’s managerial career.
The former midfielder has previously managed New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa, gaining experience across different footballing environments in the United States, England, France and Italy. However, this will be his first job as a national-team head coach.
That experience will now be put to the test as he takes charge of the Teranga Lions.
