Fenerbahçe President Ali Koç Explains Mourinho’s Sacking

Fenerbahçe president Ali Koç has revealed the reasons behind the club’s decision to part ways with José Mourinho, despite the Portuguese manager’s high-profile arrival and reputation.

Speaking to the press, Koç emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly, but the board felt that the team was not performing to its true potential.

🗣️ Ali Koç’s Statement

> “We parted ways because we believed this squad would be playing better football at this point. We knew our coach would put emphasis on defence when we brought him in, but we talked about the need to play more dominantly at the end of the season.”

Koç went on to stress that attacking football is part of Fenerbahçe’s identity:

> “Scoring 99 goals and getting 99 points, as Fenerbahçe did in the Süper Lig in the 2023-24 season, is our genetic code.”

⚽ What Went Wrong for Mourinho?

Mourinho’s tactical approach, often seen as conservative and defensive, did not align with the club’s expectations of dominant, attacking football. Despite flashes of quality, the board felt the team was underperforming given the talent available in the squad.

🔍 The Road Ahead

Fenerbahçe will now look for a manager who can restore their attacking DNA and continue the pursuit of domestic and European success. For Mourinho, questions remain over where his next challenge will come.
