Cristiano Ronaldo Hints at Retirement: ‘This Is Probably My Last Year in Football’
Football fans around the world may be preparing for the end of one of the greatest careers the sport has ever witnessed.
Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that the 2026/27 season could probably be his final year as a professional footballer, raising fresh speculation that the legendary Portuguese forward could retire in 2027.
Speaking in an interview with Vogue, the 41-year-old Ronaldo said: “This will probably be my last year in football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy.” He also revealed that he already has plans for life after football, including travelling, playing padel and enjoying more time away from the demands of professional football.
A Career That Has Defined an Era
Ronaldo’s potential retirement would bring an extraordinary 25-year professional career closer to its final chapter.
Since making his senior debut with Sporting CP in 2002, Ronaldo has gone on to become one of football’s most decorated and prolific players, starring for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Al-Nassr.
He has won five Ballon d’Or awards, five UEFA Champions League titles and numerous domestic trophies, while also becoming one of the most prolific goalscorers in the history of international football.
He currently has 976 official career goals, leaving him just 24 short of the iconic 1,000-goal milestone. Reaching that figure could become one of the major targets of what may be his final season.
His World Cup Journey Is Already Over
Ronaldo’s international career has also entered its final stage.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup was his sixth and final appearance at the tournament. Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the Round of 16, bringing an end to Ronaldo’s extraordinary World Cup journey. FIFA confirmed that he would not return for another World Cup.
Despite never winning the World Cup, Ronaldo leaves the competition with a remarkable record: he became the first player to score at six different World Cups.
He has, however, won major international honours with Portugal, including Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles.
What Comes After Football?
Interestingly, Ronaldo appears to be approaching retirement with a clear vision of what comes next.
He said he already has his future mapped out and acknowledged that leaving football could create a significant void after spending roughly 25 years completely immersed in the game.
Rather than focusing on one particular pursuit, Ronaldo plans to keep himself busy through travel, padel, family life and other interests.
For a player whose entire identity has been intertwined with football, stepping away will undoubtedly mark one of the biggest transitions of his life.
The Final Chapter?
Ronaldo has not formally announced his retirement date, so fans should treat his comments as a strong indication rather than an official retirement announcement.
His current Al-Nassr contract runs through the 2026/27 season, meaning the timing of his latest comments would align with a possible farewell at the end of that campaign.
For now, however, there is still football to be played—and perhaps 24 more goals to score.
If this really is Cristiano Ronaldo’s final season, football could be witnessing the closing chapter of one of the most extraordinary careers in sporting history.
One final season. One final challenge. One final opportunity to make history. 🐐🇵🇹
Do you think Cristiano Ronaldo should retire after the 2026/27 season, or should he continue playing for another year?
