Heartbreak in Rabat: Super Eagles Fall to Morocco in AFCON Semi-Final Thriller

The dream of a fourth continental title was put on hold yesterday as the Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a narrow defeat against tournament hosts Morocco in a tense semi-final encounter at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

After 120 minutes of grueling, goalless football, the match was decided by the narrowest of margins: a 4-2 penalty shootout in favor of the Atlas Lions.
Match Summary: A Tactical Stalemate
Nigeria entered the match as the tournament’s highest scorers, having netted 14 goals in their previous five matches. However, they met a resolute Moroccan defense that successfully neutralized the threat of Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

First Half: Both teams played cautiously, with Nigeria’s Stanley Nwabali making crucial saves to keep the score level.

Second Half & Extra Time: Nigeria struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm. Despite late pressure and the introduction of fresh legs, the Moroccan “low block” held firm, leading the game into the dreaded shootout.

The Penalty Shootout

The shootout began with hope as Nwabali saved Morocco’s first attempt from Hamza Igamane. However, the tide turned when Morocco’s veteran goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, denied both Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi.
