Mikel Oyarzabal: The One-Club Man Who Became a World Champion 🇪🇸🏆

In an era when footballers frequently move between clubs in search of bigger contracts, bigger stages and bigger trophies, Mikel Oyarzabal has chosen a different path.

The Real Sociedad captain has spent his entire senior career with the Basque club and that loyalty has now been rewarded with the biggest prize in international football.

Oyarzabal joined Real Sociedad’s youth system in 2011 at just 14 years old, having arrived from Eibar’s academy. He progressed through the club’s ranks before making his senior debut for Real Sociedad B in 2014 and his La Liga debut for the first team in October 2015.

More than a decade later, he remains at the club.

There have been opportunities to leave. Bigger European clubs have shown interest, but Oyarzabal has remained committed to Real Sociedad. In February 2023, he signed another contract extension, keeping him at the club until 2028.

And now, he has something extraordinary to show for that loyalty.

From San Sebastián to World Champion 🌍🏆

Oyarzabal entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of Spain’s experienced attacking players and ended the tournament as a world champion.

He scored five goals during Spain’s triumphant campaign and played a decisive role in their journey to the title.

His World Cup triumph also created a historic moment for Real Sociedad.

Oyarzabal became the first player formed and established at Real Sociedad to become a men’s World Cup champion, further cementing his status as one of the greatest figures in the club’s modern history.

A career built around loyalty

Oyarzabal’s story is bigger than football transfers.

He has grown from a teenager in the Real Sociedad academy into the club’s captain and one of its most important players.

He has also passed the 100-goal mark for the club, reaching the milestone in December 2024.

At international level, he has won the European Championship and now the World Cup with Spain. At club level, he has helped Real Sociedad lift the Copa del Rey.

The achievements make his career particularly remarkable because he has collected major honours without changing clubs.

One badge. One city. One extraordinary journey. 💙🤍

Oyarzabal’s career is a reminder that success in modern football does not always require moving from one giant club to another.

Sometimes, greatness can be built in one place.

He arrived at Real Sociedad as a teenager.

He developed there.

He became a star there.

He became captain there.

And now, he returns to another season wearing the same colours only this time as a World Cup champion.

Mikel Oyarzabal didn’t need to leave Real Sociedad to become a world champion. He became one while staying loyal to home.

That is becoming increasingly rare in modern football and it makes his story even more special. 🇪🇸🏆💙🤍
