Super Falcons’ World Cup Hopes End After Defeat to South Africa
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have suffered a heartbreaking 2–1 defeat to South Africa, bringing their hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup to an end.
The Falcons struggled to find a breakthrough as South Africa took control after the break. Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring in the 56th minute before Refiloe Jane doubled Banyana Banyana’s advantage in the 77th minute.
Nigeria were handed a lifeline in stoppage time when Jane was shown a red card and the Super Falcons were awarded a penalty. Christy Ucheibe stepped up and calmly converted in the 93rd minute to make it 2–1.
However, there was no time for a comeback.
The defeat comes after Nigeria’s disappointing WAFCON quarter-final loss to Cameroon, meaning the Super Falcons have now seen both their main qualification route and their final pathway to the inter-confederation playoffs disappear.
For a nation with such a proud history in women’s football, this is a painful setback.
🇳🇬 The Super Falcons may be out of the World Cup race, but the rebuilding must begin now.
