Why Sadio Mané Rejected Manchester United and Chose Liverpool Instead
Few transfer decisions in modern football have had as much impact as Sadio Mané’s choice to reject Manchester United in favor of Liverpool.
The Senegalese superstar has now revealed exactly why he turned down Louis van Gaal’s offer, and his explanation gives a fascinating insight into how top players decide their futures.
According to Mané, then-Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal personally called him in an attempt to convince him to move to Old Trafford.
“Van Gaal called me. He said, ‘Mané, how are you? What are you doing? I want you to come to Manchester United.'”
Van Gaal praised Mané’s ability and assured him that he could help United become a stronger team while also developing into an even better player.
However, Mané had one major concern: game time.
At the time, Manchester United already had several attacking stars, including Wayne Rooney, Ángel Di María, Robin van Persie, and Memphis Depay. Rather than being dazzled by the club’s stature, Mané wanted clarity about his role in the team.
He asked Van Gaal a straightforward question:
“You have Depay, Rooney, Di María and Van Persie… where am I going to play? Because for me, I wanted to play.”
Van Gaal’s response was honest but failed to convince the Senegal international.
He reportedly told Mané:
“I know your talent. If you train well and impress, you’ll play. But we also have other very good players.”
For Mané, that wasn’t enough. He wasn’t looking for uncertainty or a battle without a defined pathway. He wanted a project where he would be trusted from the start.
Then came the phone call that changed everything.
“A few days later, Klopp called me.”
Jurgen Klopp presented a completely different vision. The German manager convinced Mané that he would be a key part of Liverpool’s rebuilding project. Klopp’s belief, combined with a clear tactical plan, ultimately persuaded the winger to choose Anfield over Old Trafford.
The decision proved to be one of the smartest transfer moves of the Premier League era.
After joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2016 for around £34 million a club record fee at the time Mané became one of the world’s best forwards. Alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, he formed one of football’s most feared attacking trios.
During his six seasons at Liverpool, Mané won virtually every major trophy available, including:

Looking back, Mané’s decision highlights an important lesson in football: choosing the right project can be more valuable than simply joining the biggest club. Playing opportunities, managerial trust, and tactical fit often matter more than reputation alone.
In hindsight, Klopp’s vision aligned perfectly with Mané’s ambitions, and the rest is football history. Liverpool gained a club legend, while Manchester United missed out on one of the defining forwards of his generation.
