William Troost-Ekong Rules Out Super Eagles Coaching, Hints at Future NFF Leadership Role
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed that coaching the Nigerian national team is not part of his future plans, insisting he believes he can make a greater impact in football administration than on the touchline.
Speaking in an interview with Brila FM, as quoted by The Punch, the former Nigeria international dismissed suggestions that he could one day take charge of the Super Eagles.
“I have had so many people ask me about coaching the team. I am not sure that is something that I really want to do.”
Instead, Ekong explained that his long-term ambition is to help shape football from a leadership and policy perspective.
“I think there also need to be players that think about going one level above that, whether it is going to be in the boardroom, whether it is going to be working with federations, with FIFA, with CAF, whether the NFF. I think that is probably where you can make the biggest change.”
His comments suggest that rather than pursuing a managerial career, he is interested in influencing football through governance, administration, and decision making at the highest levels.
Ekong’s remarks have already sparked conversations among Nigerian football fans, many of whom believe experienced former internationals should take on key leadership positions within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). With his years of experience across Europe and international football, the AFCON-winning defender believes structural reforms and strong leadership can have a more lasting impact than coaching alone.
While he did not officially declare an intention to contest any position within the NFF, his comments clearly indicate that football administration is a path he is seriously considering in the future.
As Nigerian football continues to seek sustainable development both on and off the pitch, Ekong’s vision reflects a growing belief that former players can contribute significantly beyond their playing careers not just from the sidelines, but in the boardroom where major decisions are made.
Whether that journey eventually leads him to the Nigeria Football Federation, CAF, or FIFA remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: William Troost-Ekong sees his future in football leadership, not in the Super Eagles dugout.
